Meet our newest member, Mike Colacino! What is your occupation? Paramedic - Town of Guilderland EMS Why did you join your local volunteer fire department? I joined my local volunteer fire department because I was a member of the department near my previous residence and felt I have skills that can be beneficial to my local community. What is your role within your department? Interior Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) What is one of your most memorable moments in the volunteer fire or emergency services? I’d say probably the first time bringing a critical patient into the ER and being told my actions made a positive impact on their outcome, allowing them to live. Why do you think it is important for young people to get involved with their local volunteer fire department? I think it is important for younger people to get involved with their local department, because it will teach them leadership and technical skills, as well as problem solving and working within a team. What contributions do you hope to make in your community? I hope to use my training and experience not only from my work, but my previous fire department to help teach and be a mentor to other EMTs and Firefighters within the department; helping better serve the community. Do you have any advice on balancing the demands of volunteering with your job/family? Give thanks to your family members for their support, your volunteering can be just as taxing on them as it can be for you. Also remember, that your personal well being is still a priority; and you are no good to the community if you’re not feeling well or overwhelmed, so try to pace yourself, and devote adequate time for the FD, work and family as needed. |
