RAD-57
Each year the Fire Company evaluates our needs and chooses a project to enhance or improve our emergency response capabilities to purchase with donations.  This year we chose to purchase a RAD-57 Co-Oximeter.  This tool helps firefighters to detect carbon monoxide poisoning in victims of fire or exposure to high levels of carbon monoxide from common sources such as malfunctioning appliances, motor vehicles, generators, and fuel burning camping equipment.  WGFC is also the Rehab Unit for all structure fires in the Town of Glenville. We provide medical monitoring to firefighters actively engaged in firefighting for medical issues and exposure to toxic smoke.  These firefighters need to be assessed for carbon monoxide poisoning as the symptoms of CO poisoning are non-specific and easy to miss.  Symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath or even a fall.  Inexpensive Pulse Oximeters can be tricked because carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin in place of oxygen and may give a false normal reading.  By acquiring the appropriate tools to diagnose CO poisoning in patients and in firefighters who may have been exposed to carbon monoxide or other toxic gases, the proper treatment can be mobilized while advanced life support is en rout .  This is vital for a positive patient outcome.  The RAD-57 will improve our response capabilities and improve patient and firefighter safety.

Our sincere thanks to those who contributed to our 2019 annual fund drive and made this purchase possible in 2020.  If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning or a carbon monoxide problem in your household, do not hesitate to call 9-1-1.
